The City of Albi is planning to create a new area dedicated to the Albigensian navigator Lapérouse and his expedition. The project has a name: “Escale Lapérouse, des mondes à explorer”. Like all cultural projects, it’s a long-term undertaking.
With the opening of the new museum scheduled for 2029, there are many stages to follow (real estate, cultural, etc.). Some milestones have already been reached:
- In early 2021, the City Council officially launches the Lapérouse project.
- In December 2021, the City Council decided to purchase the General Treasury building. This is the building you’ll see in the photos below. This decision means that the current Musée Lapérouse will eventually have to be moved.
- In June 2023, the City Council approved the program for the construction of a new facility dedicated to the Lapérouse navigator, as well as the urban and landscaping developments in its immediate vicinity. It also decided to launch the related project management competition.
Below are extracts from the “Albi Mag” magazine, published in June 2024 by Albi City Council, presenting the project to transform the former public treasury into the “Escale Lapérouse” building.
We’ll keep you posted on the progress of this project on our website and Facebook page. The results of the architectural design competition are expected soon.
Of course, our association will be involved in this project. But that time has not yet come.
