An Adventure That Would Not Have Been Possible Without the Lapérouse Albi France Association
After several years of work, « L’Odyssée des Lumières », a visual and symphonic work dedicated to Lapérouse’s 1785 expedition, has reached a major new milestone. Conceived and created by Olivier Gavignaud, composer and music teacher at Lycée Lapérouse in Albi, this ambitious project brings Jean-François de Lapérouse’s expedition back to life through images, music and new technologies. For the Lapérouse Albi France Association (ALAF), this production represents a particularly important project. The ALAF supported Olivier Gavignaud in seeking the patrons needed to finance this work. The Association also extends its special thanks to Marc Onetto for his generosity and commitment to the project.
From Lapérouse’s Albi to Budapest
Already presented in the United States, notably in Seattle and Hawaii, The Odyssey of the Enlightenment is now taking on a truly international dimension. On 6 and 7 July 2026, the original score composed by Olivier Gavignaud was recorded in Budapest by the MÁV Symphony Orchestra Budapest, comprising 65 musicians, under the direction of Laurent Petitgirard, conductor, composer and Perpetual Secretary of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. The recording took place at the studios of MÁV Szimfonikus Zenekar, with István Matók as sound engineer and Luis Mazzoni, of Vintage Sound Studio, responsible for mixing. This encounter between the world of Lapérouse, contemporary musical composition and the performance of a major orchestra gives the project a new dimension. This milestone allows the work’s music to fully express its symphonic scope and brings the project closer to its ambition: to offer a truly cinematic and musical experience centred on Lapérouse’s expedition.
Bringing Lapérouse’s Expedition to Life
Conceived as a cinematic soundtrack, the music accompanies the major stages of the voyage: discoveries, explorations, landscapes, encounters and moments of tension. Through visual reconstructions and immersive filmmaking, the project seeks to bring the extraordinary voyage of Lapérouse and his companions to life for the audience. Combining immersive visual storytelling with an original symphonic score, the project invites viewers to embark alongside Lapérouse and his companions on a journey through the eighteenth century, following in the footsteps of this extraordinary scientific expedition. The Odyssey of the Enlightenment thus brings history, heritage, music and contemporary technologies together to share this scientific adventure with new audiences.

An Adventure That Continues
From Lapérouse’s Albi to the United States, and onwards to Budapest, « L’Odyssée des Lumières » continues to develop and is now reaching a new level. Through Olivier Gavignaud’s work, the support of his partners and patrons, and the backing of the Lapérouse Albi France Association (ALAF), the 1785 expedition is finding a new way to reach audiences. This support once again reflects the ALAF’s commitment to sharing Lapérouse’s history and keeping his legacy alive for as many people as possible, while also embracing contemporary artistic and technological approaches. This ambition could one day bring the work to Albi, Lapérouse’s birthplace, where it could be presented to the local public.
